Willy Wiener and the Tunnel of Doom Review

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play a hot dog who has to rescue a donut damsel in distress from the clutches of Hell? Well, then you're in luck, because that's exactly what MobiDojo's "Willy Wiener and the Tunnel of Doom" is about!

Willy Wiener is a heroic hot dog who is risking his buns (har har) to save Dottie the Donut from Evil Mr. Mephisto Maplebar. Your role in this is to guide Willy through eight fiery levels plus a boss level. Each level consists of two rounds. The first one has Willy falling down through the Tunnel of Doom. Using tilt controls, you have to keep him from hitting fireballs or little pitchfork-wielding devils. You also need to collect coins and gems as you fall. In order to get three stars for a level, you'll have to collect a specific number of coins, last a certain amount of time, and collect one gem.

If you survive the first round of Hell, you'll make it to round 2, where you must fling Willy over and through some bizarre obstacles to land in Dottie's donut hole. Yeah, you heard that right. But don't worry, it's still a safe game for kids. It's just some animated food, right?

To fling Willy, you use him like a slingshot. When you tap him, a ring will appear around him. You can control the speed and force at which he flies by making the ring bigger or smaller. Some levels will require he go slow and steady, while others he'll need to go faster and farther. It may take a few tries to get it right.

The second round of each level could be challenging and take some time to succeed. But that's good, because it's a fairly short game. If you make it to the ninth level, you'll face the boss battle, where you'll use the gems you collected throughout the game.

Willy Wiener has some great cutscenes and music which make it feel like an old silent film. In each one, Willy and Dottie are professing their love to each other when Mr. Maplebar steps in and literally roasts Willy. These scenes are a great touch that really makes the game stand out.

If you don't like ridiculous games, then you should probably avoid this one. But everyone else, enjoy the insanity that is Willy Wiener and the Tunnel of Doom! It's short, but there's plenty of quirky fun to be had here.

Fruit Ninja - Modern Juicy Phenomenon

In case you haven't enjoyed Fruit Ninja before, this game is actually an international phenomenon - having above 20 million overall downloads. It is a strategic, action game in which fresh fruit appears upon your display and you use your own finger in order to chop it - NINJA-style. Slicing is completed through swiping your own finger across a part of fresh fruits.

Making certain you have the strategy, Fruit Ninja starts the game by means of dropping single pieces of fresh fruit up into the air in order to be sliced - later leading up to several pieces being thrown as you try to slice as much as you are able to before they fall! If you allow 3 pieces of un-sliced fresh fruit fall down, the game is over. You receive bonuses from cutting multiple pieces of fruit concurrently. Once you've made that first move and you start to actually advance, bombs are thrown in to the mix! It's becomes extra hard because several fresh fruits are still being thrown - having to become sliced, when staying combined in with bombs that can NOT be contacted. If you hit one of these bombs, the game immediately ends. With Fruit Ninja HD, you may use as many as eight fingers at one time for the cutting and slashing needs! Talk about main fruit carnage!

Fruit Ninja's Basic mode, the one we mentioned previously, stops right after you either hit a bomb as well as miss many pieces of fruit. They also provide a Zen mode during which no bombs are involved. This mode is entirely unique getting much more of an arcade type mode. You receive 90 seconds to slice through as many pieces of fresh fruit as you're able to, then giving you a rating that you can make an effort to overcome any time you play Fruit Ninja. Both modes are usually played with a couple of participants sitting at each end of the iPad tablet. Since the game's so high speed currently, it's rather interesting having fun with someone who's sitting right across from you! Classic mode even allows you to send a bomb directly into your opponent's game!

You won't can get enough of the squishy, splatty, juicy slicing of every sort of fruit! Fruit Ninja HD can be so addictive, always causing you to be wanting more.

Several weeks ago Halfbrick launched another version of this game - Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots, with the famous DreamWorks movie character, and the voice of Antonio Banderas.

Batman: Arkham City - Worth The Wait?

In light of the upcoming PC release date for Batman: Arkham City (confirmed by WB to be November 22 for the US and various other dates for the rest of the world) - it's probably as good a time as any to remind the PC folks that yes - it is worth the wait if you don't have a 360 or PS3.

Like any other self-respecting geek, I preordered the 360 version from Best Buy, which netted me the Robin skin for challenge mode only. Bit disappointing, that - I remember pre-ordering Metroid Prime: Echoes back in the Gamecube days and getting a pretty sweet T-shirt out of the deal. Or at least it was pretty sweet until it shrank in the wash...and at this point, I see the director motioning for me to STFU and get to the point. Very well.

Naturally, I got the game on October 18th and spent about 3 weeks on-and-off playing through it (unlike some people who are much more dedicated to crimefighting, apparently). If you're familiar with the original Batman game (Arkham Asylum) - and if you're not, shame on you - you may be expecting more of the same. Not exactly.

The open world approach to Arkham City's gameplay (as opposed to the fairly linear style of Arkham Asylum) works really well - I never got tired of gliding or grappling from one building to another and swooping down to deliver some justice on random goons while headed to some objective or another. The downside is that like most open world games, you spend a lot of time wandering around trying to get to one objective or another and it's not clear how to get some side missions to open up so you can play them.

Additionally, Catwoman was apparently over-hyped as a playable character. She does indeed get some playtime, but not nearly as much as one would be led to believe. However - I will say that she is very fun to play - very different MO from Batman and has her own gadgets to knock bad guys around with - the caltrops in particular are extremely useful when dealing with certain attackers later in the game.

There are a few other minor sticking points that I thought could have been done better (especially a few of the fights late in the story mode where you have to use specific moves to defeat some attackers), but that's about it. Rocksteady definitely focused on the same "fun to play" and not "requires the reflexes of a tweaked-out cat" style that AA had.

But on to the great stuff and believe me, there is plenty of it:

The already butter-smooth combat in AA has been improved even more in AC - making it even more fun to beat the living daylights out of a huge group of guys at once. Most fights now pit you against 10+ attackers at once, you now have the ability to counter two attackers at once - and best of all in my opinion, Batman now has a hilariously over-the-top "Beat Down" move he can perform - stun an attacker with his cape and beat them into a fine paste with a rapid-fire series of punches.

You can still get by with button mashing, but AC does actually reward a little finesse in your combat style. The new gadgets including the smoke pellets and the like make this even more fun - I got way too much pleasure out of swooping in on a group of armed attackers, dropping a smoke pellet and taking out everyone in the confusion.

One other thing I really liked - the armor upgrades actually make a noticeable difference and you get a gauge on-screen with your health gauge to show how much you have left.

The AI is much improved as well and the bad guys are now very wise to Batman's tricks - the usual "hide on a gargoyle or in a dark corner" trick from AA doesn't always work - you're likely to get spotted with heat vision or have a grenade tossed into your hidey-hole.

In addition to Joker, just about every prominent Batman villain (Riddler, Harley Quinn and Bane all return from AA - no Scarecrow, sadly) makes an appearance to one degree or another. In particular the Mr. Freeze and Clayface appearances are well worth the price of admission.

Finally - the boss fights (one of the few complaints I had about AA) are generally fairly original - you don't end up replaying the same fight about 3 times in a row and they are by and large enjoyable.

Bottom line: Was it worth $65 and change to have it on release day? For me it was - I'd unreservedly give it 4 out of 5 stars. It may disappoint some fans of the original game, but anyone who enjoyed AA will probably like AC as well - it definitely does a lot of what the original video game did - only better.

Club Penguin - Kids Virtual Worlds

Club Penguin is massively multi-player online role playing game (MMORPG) that was launched in October 2005. It was developed by Club Penguin Entertainment and purchased by The Walt Disney Company in 2007. The website consists of online games and activities for children from age 6 to 14. The site has a typical Disney-looking feel to it with cartoon penguin avatars that children customize to use as their online personality. The game has also spawned physical video games for Nintendo and books.

Children can try the website for free; however, this limits the activity they can have in the virtual world. Paid memberships begin at $7.95 US per month. 6 months is $39.95 US and 12 months is $59.95 US. A paid membership allows players unlimited access to all games, themed parties, priority server access and new activities. A unique part of the website is the Coins for Change program. This program is an online charity where players donate their 'coins' for various real-world charitable causes. The website is available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

Features

Club Penguin exists in a winter virtual world where children choose an avatar in the form of a cartoon penguin to be their online personality. They choose a home for their penguin which is an igloo. Both the igloo and the penguin can be customized with accessories to fit the player's personality. Igloos are on the world's map so other players can find them. Players can also own pets called Puffles. If not taken care of, they run away and must be replaced. The Club Penguin Times is a virtual newspaper where players can submit writing, art and jokes.

When players log into the game, they first arrive in 'The Town' which hosts typical stores found in any town. Themed parties such as Christmas or Halloween happen once a month and are available to members only. The main focus of this virtual world is for players to earn 'coins' by playing games. These 'coins' allow players buy their avatars food, clothing, shelter and household items. The chat feature was originally only a small part of Club Penguin, but has recently been expanded. Members can chat about their penguins with other members in a chat room and make friends with other players. The use of emoticons is a large part of the chat feature.

What's Good

Club Penguin is a fairly innocent website that will appeal mainly to children well below age 10 who are interested in friendship with other children and simple games. The penguins are designed to appeal to small children. The facial expressions are kind and pleasant - those that would be found on a children's cartoon show. Disney and the developers were successful in designing an innocent-looking atmosphere for children. There are no adult themes in the virtual world or on the website. There is no overt violence, drinking, smoking, drug use, sex or offensive language. The games use math and reading to enhance a child's basic skills.

Disney must be commended for spending a lot of time and effort to keep the chat system safe. Ultimate Safe Chat allows only pre-scripted phrases. Standard Safe Chat blocks all profanity and inappropriate behavior even if users try to get around the filters. Words not previously approved go into a queue for review before they are posted. Moderators are plentiful. Having a chat system on a children's virtual world can be socially meaningful and Disney has done a good job in keeping it safe.

What's Bad

The age range that Club Penguin is going for seems to be a bit out of touch with the graphics. The design of the characters may be fine for post-kindergarten children, but children over the age of 10 will find them juvenile. Parents may find an increased level of consumerism as players that move through the game will learn how to acquire things for their avatar and their home. These are small quibbles for a generally good virtual world for children.

Online Safety

The website has gone above and beyond to provide a safe atmosphere for children. No personal information is ever displayed in chat - even if a player is a boy or a girl. Even the open chat (which is usually a candidate for inappropriate behavior) is strictly moderated. The section for parents is very thorough. Parents are encouraged to be highly involved in their child's online life. All personal and credit information that is collected follows the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

Pro Flight Simulator Software - Learn the Art Of Flying From Your Own Home

You've probably heard about different versions of flight simulator software. They can be very helpful for every aspiring aircraft pilot to get some realistic flying experience from the warmth of their own home. The choice of flight simulators on the market is quite huge and it's important to understand some of their features before you decide which one to get.

Many people choose flight simulation software because it's relatively inexpensive and it gives them the opportunity to learn a lot about actual flying. It's a great way to learn basics before actually getting into the aviation academy or into some expensive flying course.

Nice characteristic of many flight simulator software packages is that they can be operated by to use joysticks, pedals and various controllers and some of them will allow you to use only keyboard. For the latest packages the graphic is also becoming very important and they've put lot of work into it. Such packages put lot of attention to detail so you will get lot of scenery details with them, including rivers, lakes, towns, roads and mountains. The experience with these modern flight simulator programs is quite realistic and they can definitely help you to sharpen your skills and teach you the fundamentals of flying.

The objective of any flight simulator software package is to teach you how to become a pilot and instruct you on basics of flying. They tend to be quite user-friendly making the whole process rather easy and straightforward. But be warned, most of the good flying simulators will require some learning time! They are designed to be more like a training devices rather than standard computer games. This is why it's helpful to get a better quality simulator that can be operated by pedals, joysticks, yokes and other types of controllers, if you are really interested in learning how to fly. Make sure to check the system requirement and if you computer model and operating system are supported!

Yokes, for example, are used to raise and drop the aircraft, making the whole experience of flying much more realistic. By using them you'll get a hint of how real pilot would feel inside the cockpit of an actual plane. So it's important to get familiar with all the options and features when it comes to choosing the flight simulator software. Lot of new packaged and released are coming out every year and all of them bring something new and different than before. For the best learning experience you will have to choose the package that best suits your needs and aspirations.

Don't be mesmerized by all the shiny graphics and animations by certain packages. Such flying simulators are made to look nice and are very playable and fun but the experience of flying is rather poor. These games are made for wider audience and are great for playing with for a while but when it comes to actual learning experience, thy have zero value.

If you are truly interested in learning how to fly you'll have to choose the right option for you and go for the flying simulator that can be operated by joystick, yokes, pedals and other types of controllers. These should give you the right kind of experience for your new journey into the art of flying.

I've tried many different flight simulator software packages on the market and currently I'm happy with the Pro Flight Simulator Suite package. Read more detail about it at Pro Flight Simulator Review page.

Batman Arkham City Review

The greatest detective in the world returns to clean up the city of Arkham and playing Batman has never been more fun, the days of bang, biff and pow marks during fights are gone as Batman is now more of a moody, grizzly type of character, just like in the recent films.

When it comes to voice acting you won't be getting Christian Bale as Batman but Kevin Conroy delivers a great performance, it might interest you to know that in the game Mark Hamill AKA Luke Skywalker provides a voice for The Joker.

It's hard to put Arkham City into a category as while it looks like a beat em up it also has puzzle, stealth and RPG elements, one puzzle will have you investigating a murder scene and in others you'll have to figure out how to cross hazardous areas by using one of several gadgets.

Gadgets in the game are great and you'll get to play with everything from a cryptographic sequencer to the Batarang, the gadgets in the game don't serve as powerful weapons but they'll prove invaluable when it comes to saving your life and solving puzzles.

There's lots of fighting in the game and as you'd guess you'll be taking on baddies as individuals and in large groups, the combat in the game isn't on a par with Ninja Gaiden but it still makes you feel hard as nails.

Anyone familiar with Batman knows he doesn't have super powers so when baddies have weapons you need to change tactics, proceeding to pummel bad guys with guns leaves you exposed and this is where the games stealth elements come into play.

Batman has a variety of means at his disposal for dealing with bad guys one of which is known as detective mode, detective mode allows Batman to see through walls and gives you a big tactical advantage when you need to pick of enemies silently one by one.

The RPG elements of Arkham City aren't really deep but the rewards they deliver motivate you to keep going, knocking out bad guys and completing missions enables you to unlock a variety of upgrades that give Batman extra abilities.

Boss fights in the game vary in their difficulty as while some take little effort others will have you retrying, Mr Freeze can be a particular handful and you'll have to stretch your grey matter significantly to figure out how to breach his defences.

Arkahm City is a large place but you won't be driving around in the Batmobile to get from A to B, the process of getting around the city is still a lot of fun as you'll be swinging and gliding around with the use of the Batclaw and cape.

Adrian Williams has reviewed Batman Arkham City in addition to a variety of the latest video games, for videos and further details on Arkham City be sure to check out his Batman Arkham City Review

Maestro: Notes of Life Review

Maestro: Notes of Life is a hidden object and adventure creation of ERS Games. For those who know ERS Games, they are the developers of some of the best hidden object games available in the market today. Maestro: Notes of Life is no exception to being a great game as this sequel after Maestro: Music of Death takes the player to another dark musical ride with a new story, new scenarios, and creative puzzles that is certified to be loved by many.

The story of the game opens up with a nicely produced cut scene of a young girl kidnapped by some magical music. Your task in the game is of course to save the girl, but it will not be easy as magic and puzzles hinder your path. The magical music came from a young and talented musician, but is he the mastermind behind all of what is happening? Or is he another pawn to a much more evil entity?

As for the graphics of Maestro: Notes of Life, I can say that ERS Games once again did a great job in this installment's development. The introduction cut scene is already gripping and amazing to watch that you will be sure to get hooked to playing from start to finish. Game play is very good. Hidden object scenes are nicely done with little to no pixel finding involved, even with most of these scenes piled with so much junk.

The atmosphere of the game is eerie which is to be expected of the Maestro series and ERS Games in general. As a matter of fact, ERS Games is so much known for making dark themed adventure games that I am currently wondering if they have the ability to expand further in more unique hidden object game themes. I say more unique since most of the hidden object games being developed nowadays are those with dark themes, making you scurry and find items in purposely scary places. I am not against these kind of games but it can get really standard sometimes that I stop getting surprised on supposedly new gaming experiences.

Do not get me wrong though, I still loved playing Maestro: Notes of Life and would recommend it for everyone to try, new and old casual gamers alike. Being a seasoned adventure and hidden object gamer, it works against me sometimes when I come across another eerie game, but that does not mean that Maestro: Notes of Life would not have anything new to offer that sets it apart from other games on the same genre.

The Dead Island Game Review

The name itself is a definition of terror and adventure, and Dead Island games is much more than that. The video game was developed by Tech land and has become an instant rage for players all over the world. The game was developed for Microsoft windows, PlayStation, etc and cam be assessed on most gaming interfaces. Like most video games this one also tells the player a tale of its own and helps the gamer get into the virtual gaming world in first person. The games are published by deep Silver.

The game can be played in multi player mode as well as single player mode. The games have amazing graphics and state of the art sound and video quality. The gamer can instantly connect to such games as there is a lot of role-playing and active participation in the characters by the player.

The games are virtually of a fictional place called the island of Banoi and tells the story of characters like Logan, Xian, Sam B, and Purna who find themselves in a posh hotel and it is when emergency strikes does the game begin where the players have to select weapons and fight their little battles for survival. The story is well told and the adventure and twists and turns in the drama carry the interest of the gamer.

The best part about the game is the incorporation of human emotions like drama, adventure and horror as a part of the game and it helps liven up the characters. The game also goes to include new technology in its concept like the inclusion of zombie and the fight of the humans against it for survival. The Dead Island also makes generous usage of the landscape in the island with finesse, and the rain forest is an adventurous place indeed.

The game is a much played one on the online format as well and it is also available in optical disks. The technology savvy and game addict would find it hard to resist with features like activity measuring bar and role-playing. Once you get started on this adventure it is hard to stop, with the amazing outdoor environment and the realistic battle and combat scenes. The zombie experience is for you to enjoy with a hint of horror and adventure which would fuel your adrenaline rush. LEGO Universe - Cool Kids Games

LEGO Universe is a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) that was launched in October 2010 by Warner Brothers. Although the game is rated for players age 10 and up, it also appeals to adults who are gamers and who have grown up with LEGO. Players are able to play in two different worlds for free, though universal access to all features requires a monthly $10 subscription. Players download the game from the LEGO Universe website and then access the game on secure servers. The game is available in English and German.

The popularity of LEGO extends back to 1949 when the interlocking plastic bricks were first produced in Denmark. Since that time, the company has expanded into books, games, amusement parks, robotics and video games. The attraction to LEGO is its simplistic block-by-block designs whereby children (and adults) can build anything they desire. The creation of LEGO Universe is not only an additional branch of LEGO - it is a marketing tool to further establish the LEGO brand.

About the Virtual World

In LEGO Universe, players take the role of LEGO minifigures in an age-old battle of good versus evil in an alternate universe. A maelstrom is the center of the dark energy that threatens the universe. Players split up into teams (or factions) to try and destroy the maelstrom and a beast called a Spider Queen in various worlds. Players collect battle gear on their journey to help them fight their foes. Players also collect LEGO bricks along the way to build models on their personal property. Properties are like a home base where the player is safe and is able to allow fellow players access to their property.

What's Good

LEGO Universe is an action-oriented game that will appeal mainly to tween boys and older teens who are fascinated with futuristic worlds and fantasy. The graphics and overall design of the game are top-notch. With LEGO and Warner Brothers partnering on this project, you would expect nothing but rich colors, detailed images and a solid platform. Parents can be reassured that there are no adult themes in the game. There is no drinking, smoking, drug use, sex or offensive language. Words that are not found in the dictionary will not be shown.

LEGO Universe offers an easy-to-navigate website for parents to find out information about the game, registration, online safety and customer service. Players can easily connect with fellow players in an online community, share game plans and become friends anonymously. The LEGO brand is heavily promoted through the website and not through the game. Although tokens cannot be accumulated to buy LEGO merchandise, players can easily browse the entire LEGO catalogue online to purchase LEGO products.

What's Bad

Violence may be an issue with some parents. Although there is no blood or gore that can be associated with adult video games, players are involved in an intense battle of good versus evil that may be a bit extreme for younger players. Swords, knives, hammers and laser guns are used as weapons. Although the players are only made of LEGO, characters do get smashed, broken and die. The facial expressions on most of the evil characters can be quite obtuse and unsettling for younger players.

Parents may see an increase of requests for LEGO products just because the LEGO brand is associated with the game. Younger players may find the storyline complicated, but their familiarity with online gaming should ease them into the story. Some themes may be too intense for younger players. Parents should browse the game with younger players and discuss these themes.

LEGO has traditionally been a popular children's toy that has succeeded because of high quality and standards. LEGO has done an excellent job of promoting online safety and has provided parents with many tools to share concerns about safety or design issues with LEGO Universe. LEGO's online safety message is prominently displayed and spelled out in easy-to-understand language. A moderator is a prominent role within the game and in online chatting to ensure a child's safety.

Players and parents should be aware that the game is scheduled to be shut down at the end of January 2012. Though the game is based on the popular LEGO blocks, the company is disappointed with the game's online presence and has decided to shut LEGO Universe down. Players with existing paid memberships will enjoy one free month of play in January. Refunds for any unused credit will be paid back to the credit card holder beginning February 1, 2012.

How To Become a Video Game Tester at Home

The video game business has become a billion dollar industry and continues to grow at an ever increasing rate. Through this explosive growth and the advances in technology has arisen new and exciting job opportunities for video game testers.

Within North America there are literally dozens of game development design studios all aggressively perusing there share of this enormous gaming market.

To assure their success many new game developers will seek the aid of professional video game testers prior to a major market launch. This will provide critical impute towards improvements and debugging any glitches. This is also an effective cost savings measure most companies must employ as it's critical to any successful game launch to be a flawless as possible in today's competitive marketplace.

Some design studios bring in game testers to conduct analysis in a controlled environment while others will seek home based game testers as we are discussing here.

How to become a Video Game Tester at Home

The demand for these types of jobs has been steadily increasing year after year and can be difficult to acquire. I will be sharing my tips on how you can become a game tester at home starting today.

There are basically two types of video game testers ones that are actually paid to perform the service and those who are not. Becoming a Beta tester is usually free and available over the internet to those who are interested. This beta testing is usually made available only after the paid testers have completed their task. This acts as one final step of performance assurance on a larger scale. Design studios are very aware of the social media age we live in. Just how quickly negative news travels along with its potential affect on the profitability of a game launch or a company's reputation is reason enough to conduct proper testing.

Many professional video game testers will have a post secondary education and be employed full time within the industry earning a predetermined salary. However there is a rapidly growing market for video game testers at home. This covers a much wider spectrum and can include people from all over North America. These testers are paid hourly and will report back on questions such as preferred gaming modes, graphics, menus, functionality, ease of navigation and more.

Many studios will require a resume that should contain your work experience and education. Do not forget to include any games you're presently playing or have played extensively in the past. Doing some research on the studio you're applying to and evaluating some of the previous games they've put out along with your thoughts for improvement will also help. This can make you to stand out in the crowd and spark their interest in you as a potential game tester.

Search forums for available video game testing in Beta. Although it's free and you don't get paid it does convey your passion for gamming and your desire to do this professionally when included with your application or resume.

Remember don't try and overplay your hand here by trying to impress them. They are looking for real and honest opinions from everyday people not someone just telling them what they want to hear or how great you think there other games are.

Another way you can be unique is by starting a blog about you're Beta testing and write your reviews and experiences about the games you've tested. Research the games you test and provide comments from other gamers as this will help indicate your abilities to evaluate future games.

There are several companies online that can help guide you in locating video game testing jobs. They provide additional tips and strategies to get you accepted quickly and the cost is relatively low considering the quality of jobs they provide and the time they will save you.

Some additional benefits to using a guide is that they will often have access to gaming studio compensation plans that will indicate the per hour rate for individual games. This can make the process of how to become a video game tester at home that much easier. Remember it's not as easy as sending an email and simply asking, you will stand a much better chance if you follow the application of each studio properly and use some of the pointers you learned here.

Mother Nature Review

Mother Nature just arrived from Big Fish Game's arsenal of strategy games so I thought I would go at it with a review of my own. And if you do not know Mother Nature yet, basically it is just a strategy game featuring a fairy with a green thumb. You plant stuff, you pull out the weeds and if there is garbage, you get to clean it too. In other words, all the excitement you can get from gardening. And in case you did feel true enthusiasm from that last sentence, I suggest you read on with the rest of this review.

You play as Autumn, a fairy with fairy friends that need rescuing. Of course, being the sole fairy spared by the Spirit of Gloom, you are tasked to kill all the plants that the evil spirit has left. Let us call these plants evil weeds from now on. And the way to kill evil weeds is by planting good seeds close to them. The flowers that grow from the planted seeds will eventually kill the evil weeds so that you are free to pull them off the ground. Keep watering your flowers and cleaning garbage and you already have a grip on all of the game's mechanics.

If you read the last paragraph above, you may already have guessed my verdict on Mother Nature. Game play is too repetitive and there is not much challenge on each level even though it is tagged as a "strategy" game. There is very little to no strategy involved at all. This is more of a child's game, but I am afraid even seasoned children players might find this game as too boring to play. Coupled that with the annoying background sound and you are left with a game that you would not enjoy for long.

On a positive note though, Mother Nature do have cute and colorful characters and graphics. Click response is good enough and the mechanics are very easy to follow and guess as you go along the game, mainly due to the failure of a guide they call a tutorial.

In summary, I suggest you skip downloading this game or download only for trial purposes since it is free anyway. There are plenty more strategy games that is worth your time and money since they do have "strategy" involved, because in my honest opinion, this game is not it.

Assassin's Creed Revelations: Video Game Review!

When purchasing new video games, Assassin's Creed Revelations video game reviews have been quite high by gamers who have come to love the series of games, and have stated that it is better than the second game in the series, Assassin's Creed II. The game offers an excellent story line, mixed with several twists and turns throughout the game, and it also answers several questions which were left by the first two video games in the series. Several video game reviews have also stated that the Altair sections are quite interesting, and will really speak to the gamers who loved the first game in the series. The game also offers a wide array of interesting characters that you will come across while playing, and has a great ending for those who like to jump ahead.

Constantinople is a very large city in the game, and is a big part of the game; you will find that while playing, you will spend several hours just exploring the city, to find hidden gems, and discover what it has to offer. As far as the platforming of the new video games series, there are a few sections in the game that are lacking, while others are great, and have plenty to offer. The visual effects are good, and the draw distances are also fairly impressive as you are playing. The game also offers a great sound track, much better than the first two games in the series. There are however a few areas in platforming that the developers missed on, especially first person platforming, which was not well thought out or developed by the creators and designers of the game. The Den defense also seems to be a bit out of place in the whole series of things.

Overall, Creed Revelations is far better than its predecessor Brotherhood, and the AC2 which is the first game in the series. The main character, Ezio, is a 50 year old man, who is on a mission to reach Masyaf to enter Altair's library, in the original Assassin Castle. However, he first has to recover the five keys which Altair hid through the city of Constantinople, therefore this is the main storyline in the game, and this is where Ezio is going to spend most of the time, while meeting several new characters during his mission. The plot of the game also reveals many questions which were left behind by the first two games, and picks up about halfway through where the Brotherhood game in the series left off. Therefore, gamers are going to see the interaction between Altair and Ezio as the game develops. The story continues through this plot, and Ezio makes his way through Constantinople, to get to Altair's castle, while searching for five keys. Overall the video game reviews for Assassin's Creed Revelations have been fairly high.

Mobile Gaming Quality Improving As Devices Improve

The problem with the relatively new market of mobile games has been the limitations of the mobile devices but are we beginning to see those restrictions ease?

Games designed for playing on handsets and other mobile devices are improving as game developers are able to build more elaborate graphics and, whilst we probably won't see serious gamers flinging their PS3s, Xboxes and Nintendo in the trash just yet, there are new breeds of games coming out that do offer more.

Typically the type of game on offer for the average iPhone user little more than a year ago was a very lite-on graphics affair - perhaps word puzzles, search games or scaled-down versions of social games like FarmVille with their bright colors and relatively slow-pace; in the past year slightly more complex games and action-based games have become very popular, as the ridiculous amount of downloads of Angry birds has shown.

There are even newer breeds of action-based game that are more graphics intensive appearing in the apps stores, with lots of animation, but without being overly bulky, top-heavy or memory-hungry.

The skill of the game developers has gone hand-in-hand with the skill of the device manufacturers to produce better, more textured, multi-layered games, designed for devices that are more powerful, have better processors and graphics chips and have a battery life to support extended play times.

The moans and groans that met the recent release of the iPhone 4s, from people who'd been expecting the release if the iPhone 5, meant that some major improvements to that phone were missed - many specifically designed to improve the mobile gaming experience.

These improvements include the use of the A5 chip, which is the same as the one used in the iPad 2. This provides twice as much CPU speed as the iPhone 4. It also has a dual core graphics processor that is seven times faster than the iPhone 4. These two features, along with the extended battery life, all make for a more game-oriented device.

This, of course, is great news for the casual gamers you see tapping their iPhone screens on the bus on the way to work in the morning, because it means a better gaming experience; whether it will be enough to attract serious gamers as well as mums, dads and kids, is not so clear.

Just recently I tried out a new free sidescroller game from the App store; it was very graphics intensive, with very beautiful landscapes where I had to guide a spaceship through. It was a throwback to the days of Atari video games and great fun.

I almost forgot that I was using my iPhone to play that game, it was so unlike typical iOS games; there's no doubt that games are becoming higher quality as the devices improve.

Defense Grid: The Awakening PC Video Game Review

Defense Grid: The Awakening is a tower defense game that was first released way back in 2009. If you decide to download the title today, you can probably find it on sale, like I did. In that case-or even if you have to full price, if I'm to be completely honest-you should definitely make a purchase. Hidden Path Entertainment has put together a truly satisfying package.

There's a story, of course: aliens are invading a futuristic complex and you have to save it. You do so by activating defensive measures (mostly gun turrets) while a chatty AI pal who occasionally sounds a lot like Zartan from the old G.I. Joe cartoon gives you alerts and talks about raspberries. He once was a human, you understand. That was years ago, though, and now he just wants to help you as you defend "the grid." The story isn't especially deep. It's told in bits and pieces, through mournful snippets of dialogue that you'll hear repeatedly if you happen to suck at completing a given stage. By the end of the game, you'll know the full tragic tale of your mechanical chum.

The plot isn't really the reason that Defense Grid is such a wonderful experience, though. The real draw is the strategy side of things. Placing towers to stop a seemingly endless stream of enemies doesn't seem like it should serve as the basis for a successful subgenre, but for some reason it almost always does. A few times, I've sat down to play for a minutes before going to bed and then looked up hours later only to find that night had come and gone. That's a rare enough occurrence for me nowadays that I really notice it when it happens.

At a glance, Defense Grid doesn't differ a lot from the typical tower defense title. You start off with a paltry few units and your arsenal expands over time. The first few that you'll gain are often the most useful, however. They include standard guns, flame cannons and lasers. Each piece of arsenal that you add to the mix (known here as "towers") will cost you resources. You start a stage with a set amount of resources and you gain more of them as you gun down aliens that are trying to reach your cores. The goal is to prevent them from doing so, but that's not always possible. Sometimes, you have to just shoot them down before they can escape with any cores that they may have grabbed. If too many cores are snagged by enemies in a given level, you lose. The better you do at preventing those precious cores from being taken, the higher your score will be when you complete a stage.

The score component definitely adds something to Defense Grid. Each stage features default scores that you can try to beat, and you can also compete with friends to prove your superiority. Placing somewhere on the general scoreboard isn't difficult (you're essentially guaranteed placement as long as you clear a map), but snagging a top spot is another matter entirely. You'll need to play a nearly perfect game if you want to claim true victory. Even winning a map without losing any cores might not be enough; you also need to make sure that you're not wasteful with your resources.

Unfortunately, even with the leaderboards on hand to keep you motivated, Defense Grid can become dull after prolonged exposure. It's best played a few hours at a time, or even for a few minutes here and there. If you try to clear too many maps at once, the repetitive nature of things can start to wear on you. Almost without exception, the strategy to clear a map is to start by placing inexpensive units so that they block choke points and force aliens to take the longest route to the core. Then you upgrade some of those units and supplement them with more expensive varieties. There are occasional complications in the form of multiple entry and exit points for enemies in the later stages, but even then your best bet is to force everyone to snake through some well-placed machine guns (your most basic defense) that you have upgraded to their maximum level.

If the general campaign gets old, though, there also are alternatives. Missions include special objectives that switch things up. Your options change depending on the scenario. In one case, you might be able to try a familiar stage with 99 waves instead of the usual 25 or 30. Elsewhere, you might be able to start with 20,000 resources but defeated enemies won't drop any additional resources. Since there are more than 20 missions, each with a handful of compelling variations, Defense Grid can keep you entertained for a long while if you'll just let it.

While Defense Grid won't ever be mistaken for a graphical powerhouse (this isn't the genre for that), its presentation is pleasingly effective. You can zoom in and see good detail on the towers and the invading enemy forces, or you can pull your perspective back to view things from a distance (typically the best option if you're serious about winning or unfamiliar with a map's nuances). Despite the amount of on-screen activity in the more hectic areas, the action progresses quite smoothly on a decent PC. You can also speed up the invasion by holding the 'F' button on your keyboard, or the appropriate button on your gamepad. There's never a point where things move at an incredible pace, but that's probably for the best.

If you've been looking for an interesting title to add to your Steam library and you like being an armchair general, Defense Grid: The Awakening is a terrific investment. Featuring a wealth of content and solid campaign design that shows a thorough understanding of what makes the genre click, Hidden Path Entertainment's attempt at tower defense is arguably the best on the market. Just don't be surprised if it leaves you hungry for raspberries.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Video Game Overview

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Harry, Hermione and Ron continue in their quest to vanquish the remaining brood of Horcruxes before Harry's epic final showdown with Lord Voldermort. The site of this ultimate battle between good and evil is the magical school of Hogwarts. Storm into the barricaded vaults of Gringotts Bank, get refuge from Fiendfyre in the breath taking Rook of Requirements and take the fight to Lord Voldermort's most formidable allies. The action is the most spectacular EA Sports have come up with in the Harry Porter series.

Right from the start, it is clear that the days of learning spells, mixing potions and juvenile ramblings in the Hogwarts' school of magic, have given way to riveting confrontation. Like Part 1, Deathly Hallows 2 is an intense battle where machine guns, pistols and grenade launchers are replaced by spell-spitting magic wands.

You not only play as Harry but at various stages, you will take on other characters as well including Hermione, Ron, Ginny, Molly Weasley and even Professor McGonagall. Each plays a vital part in defending Hogwarts and keeping Voldermart's hordes at bay. You will need to employ as many elements of advanced wizardry as you can muster if you are to emerge victorious over the forces of darkness that include Snatchers, Death Eaters and giants.

While Hogwarts has been an intrinsic part of previous series, Deathly Hallows 2 brings it out in a way that is different from others before it. Battle fields are strewn with objects you can conveniently take cover behind and either fire blindly or pop up to take aimed shots. Note however that the more you fire non-stop, the worse your aim gets. Part 2 clearly favours pausing and taking aim before you shoot. If you have played Gears of War video, the fighting technique in Deathly Hallows 2 is strikingly similar.

Use the Expelliarmus to break the foes magical shield. Enemies can 'apparate' - a plume of smoke signals their appearance. You too will be able to 'apparate' as you progress further into the game though this teleporting is limited to short distances of no more than 10 metres. One of the most exciting parts of the game is when you provide cover from enemy fire for Seamus Finnigan.

Deathly Hallows 2 is comparatively short - just shy of 4 hours - and this might be disappointing for hard core gamers. But on the bright side, this is not necessarily a bad thing as not many people can muster the time (nor is it encouraged) to realistically play a video game for 6 or 8 hours non-stop. When you complete the campaign, sequences can be replayed in Challenge Mode where you can evaluate your completion times.

Part 1 was great but came under considerable criticism with some reviews even going as far as asserting that it did not live up to the high standards that was expected of the official Harry Porter game. The design of Deathly Hallows 2 is a substantial improvement and is in fact pretty impressive even when compared to games in the same genre.

You are more likely to understand the different parts and characters of Part 2 if you have watched the movie. On the other hand, the game narratives are not the same as those of the film and this helps remove predictability for players that have already watched it. Interestingly, the lack of elaborate character development and real plot in Deathly Hallows 2 is a positive - you avoid the less-than-joyful path of the book and movie.

EPOCH Game Review

If you're a fan of cover-based shooting games, you'll want to check out the iOS game EPOCH by Uppercut Games.

In EPOCH, you play a robot in a gorgeous 3D post-apocalyptic world. You have only one goal in mind, which is to save the princess. To do so, you'll battle your way through ten different levels against enemy robots.

Each level consists of three battles, one after another. When you clear one area, you move on to the next. In each area, you have three positions that you can switch between. In order to move from one position to another, you swipe the screen left or right. There is also a super move that will make your robot jump back and forth between the two outer positions. This jump is crucial against certain enemies like the Slicer, so you'll want to get used to using it. You take cover behind an object by swiping down, and swipe up to attack. You need to select a target in order for your robot to shoot. In addition to your main gun, you have a counter weapon, missiles, and even a booster that can accelerate your robot or even heal him.

The enemy robots include Grenadiers, Slicers, and Blasters, who each have their own special attack. In order avoid getting destroyed by them, you'll have to keep your eyes and ears open and your fingers moving fast.

EPOCH is a fast-paced game that is easy to learn, but takes some practice to master. Luckily, you can replay each level to earn more credits and buy better fear if you're having trouble progressing. But ultimately, your skill will enable you to survive.

EPOCH doesn't only shine for its gameplay. It was designed with the Unreal Engine, which was used to make the award-winning Infinity Blade. If you were looking for a futuristic robot version of Infinity Blade, this comes pretty close. It is on-rails, so you can't walk around and explore. Most of the scenery is shown through cutscenes. But while you're playing, you get to experience satisfying explosions and impressive backflips. Everything is simply breathtaking. I never imagined a post-apocalyptic world could be so inviting.

EPOCH is an all-around superb game with highly-addictive gameplay and gorgeous graphics. It is fairly short, but comes with three difficulty levels for those who breeze through Easy kode too quickly. I would definitely recommend the game to anyone who likes fast-paced shooters and stunning 3D graphics. It's a game you may have trouble putting down.

If you'd like to read more about EPOCH and see some screen caps, check out my website: http://www.appunwrapper.com/2011/12/09/epoch-review/.

Ateam Made an iPhone Game That Is Perfect for Both Japanese Horror Fans and Room Escape Fans

Ellie - Help Me Out...Please By Ateam

Ateam has created a wonderfully creepy room escape game with Ellie - Help Me Out...Please. All the staples of a great room escape game are here, with the added bonus of it feeling like a Japanese horror flick.

The gameplay of Ellie works like the usual room escape game, only you instruct Ellie to do things for you, since you're watching her through a monitor. If you want her to examine something, you simply tap on it and she will explain (in Japanese with English subtitles) what she's found. She is looking to you for help escaping this cell, so you need to come up with all the ideas for her. This works really well and gives it more depth than the escape games that simply put you in a room and have you tap on items. The interactivity with the little girl makes it more interesting.

Some of the puzzles are challenging and hard to figure out, but even if you have to refer to a walkthrough, this is a game worth finishing.

The art of Ellie is in 2D and looks like a graphic novel. It's drawn well, from the little girl to the monitors through which you watch her. The drawings really capture the dark and creepy mood that the game wishes you to feel. The soundtrack also helps pull you in, as it's haunting and eerie. It also captures the mood perfectly, and I can't imagine the game without it.

Ellie - Help Me Out...Please also offers more replay value than many games of the genre. There are multiple endings, both good and bad, and you'll want to replay it to see them all.

Ellie is a free game and definitely worth your time. If you get too frustrated with the puzzles, here are some tips to help you out:

1. Make sure you get her organizer before opening the drawers. To do this, have her inspect the drawers in the left screen. While she's distracted, turn to the right screen and pick up the organizer. Without it you won't be able to complete the game.

2. If you're having trouble with the code for the drawers, focus only on the top two numbers you found. If the numbers you got, when compared to the poster, show a short line, that represents "Left." If you see a long line, that represents "Center." From the numbers you have, you will get a sequence made up of six "Left" and "Center."

I hope that helps you out. This can be a challenging game. But stick with it, because the endings are worth seeing.

If you want to see some photos of the game, or need help, check out my website and full walkthrough at: http://www.appunwrapper.com/2011/11/22/ellie-help-me-out-please-walkthrough

Mortal Kombat 9: Video Game for PS3 and Xbox 360: Gameplay Overview

The Mortal Kombat 9 and its upgrades are greatly improved! The sound effects of the game are awesome with the inherently dark, foreboding and sinister music having a little more of a hip hop influence. Each character in the game gets two fatalities and is gorier and deadlier than in any previously released version of the game. The previous version entertained gamer's for hours by allowing them to play with fifteen separate characters as also seen in the movie series. All the original characters from the previous games return in Mortal Kombat 9 and are joined by seven new characters. You, as the player would have a chance to take on Kitana, Jade, Reptile, Scorpion, Mileena, Sub-Zero's masked version and Ermac which is a new red ninja. The game while being a new version still retains some of its older characteristics such as friendships and babalities. However, in this new version, these specific traits are funnier than seen in any previous game. You would find yourself rolling on the floor due to Cyrax who has a unique but silly new dance. Moreover, while he does this, Kano pops bubble gum into his face.

Even though the game retains some of its older characteristics, it also introduces many new properties as well. A good example of this is the property of animalities. Animalities are new to the game in this version but can be remembered from one of the Mortal Kombat movies. The characters transform into animals just before wiping out their opponents. Every character has a separate animality ranging from dragons to bulls and polar bears. As a matter of fact, you can even choose what kind of a move you will use to wipe out your opponent. The new options provided in terms of moves for wiping out opponents add great entertainment value to the game that takes it one step ahead of all it's previous versions. Additionally, there are also four new stages which have been added to Mortal Kombat 9. These new stages include the Waterfront, the Scorpion's Lair, the Jade's Desert, and the Kahn's Kave.

The improvements in the gameplay of this game are significant enough to deal with one of the complaints that some fans had in the past i.e. the game being a little too easy. However, this new version provides a greater challenge to the players this time around owing to the gameplay being made a little more difficult to manage. The true fans of the game may be tempted to go for the Mortal Kombat Trilogy upgrade wherein absolutely every character that has ever been in a Mortal Kombat game to date is included. This would not only allow fans to have an improved game of Mortal Kombat but also get a chance to play all their favourite characters from previous games. Needless to say, a fan, who gets the trilogy format, would get to enjoy traversing all the characters in this new, fast and action packed gameplay.

Blood and Glory - New Hit From Glu Mobile

Blood and Glory is Glu's newest absolutely free video game, and it also has taken primary idea from iOS mega-hit Infinity Blade. The entire gameplay is analogous, if not identical; competitors are in one-on-one battlegrounds versus a gladiatorial competitor, avoiding, shielding, as well as parrying attacks if you want to stun the opponent to be able to release combos on them. Challenges are positioned up as part of tournament ladders, where participants have to eliminate a number of enemies one after the other in order to triumph, obtaining gold coins to spend on new things just like weaponry, shields, as well as helmets. Rubies perform the duties of this game's credits, being used to acquire money, unique things, and potions intended for curing and statistic buffing. They usually are acquired by way of ranking up up, through finishing Tapjoy deals, and by purchasing them.

Blood and Glory can be common, though the gameplay works nicely here, and really delivers challenging. With no special spells, along with little parrying windows as compared to its progenitor, it proves to be much more challenging. At least potions, though not really inexpensive to purchase, may be used mid-match too. The game should appear great on the iPad and also Retina Screen. A good amount of useful armor as well as weapons can be found irrespective of the concept of this game being ever-so-slightly more grounded actually, as well as one shield that could cause Ed Gein excited.

The game play can have accomplished very well to differentiate it's product a little bit more as compared to as it currently stands. Even while it's structurally completely different, the gameplay cuts close enough that this really is upon that line of being identical copy. Though unlike the Ninja Fishing dispute, no one is going to be weeping for Epic and ChAIR Entertainment, specifically since they've reportedly made around $20 million by Infinity Blade. On the other hand, principally, it's about the same, and more variations in gameplay making it its own video game could have been enjoyed. Furthermore, this video game can be very tough to play without spending a dime for a long time, because potions are just available via the in-app credits structure. The fact is, lots of money has to be put in order look around the game's depths, particularly with matches which cost you large amounts of jewels to take part in. Though doing several items pricey can be part for the path for other freemium Glu games and it is completely ok with me, having potions only accessible by means of credits which can be sparingly offered in-game does not sit well with me.

Sure, it's generally Infinity Blade covered by a Glu premium cover. But Infinity Blade seemed to be very interesting, and Blood and Glory follows the same tactic to element similarly enjoyable gameplay. Although the freemium aspects providing a glorified paywall after a not much time turns out to be on the frustrating aspect, this is a good stopgap for many who have finished killing the God King, and need anything to play when they loose time waiting for Infinity Blade 3. Android users gets more pleasure out of this, as the platform lacks Infinity Blade completely.

Fate Extra Review

Fate Extra, Type-Moon's latest RPG game centered around Japanese Anime -Fate Stay Night. Just like the anime, the video game features an exciting story which is all about masters, servants, Holy Grail, and stellar boss fights that bring the story's central struggles to life. Regrettably, lousy exploration and monotonous fights undermine the adventure. The result is a video game with much more uniqueness than game material and far more plot than actual game play.

Fate Extra's original story encourages you to keep playing regardless of some clichés. After twenty years of harmony on Earth, an alien super-computer concealed on the moon has invited you to battle through a competition for the Holy Grail, computer that grants wishes. The issue is that it's actually a competition to the death. Using your legendary soul - servant that fights in your stead, you have to defeat several other masters in weekly elimination fights to survive. Activities resulting in these battles are extremely fascinating, with each competitor challenging you in various ways. Master-Servant interactions are also enchanting, since you're offered three servants to select from, and each has a different character. Dialogues keep things engaging, motivating plot decisions which affect the game's final.

Fate Extra RPG Elements

Living in this aggressive and ruthless world is tough enough for any participant, but your memory loss (main character has an amnesia) greatly weakens your servant. In order to win your competition, you must level the arena by unveiling the other competitor's skills and strategies within 1 week prior to the fight. This investigation is vital for you to unlock enemy techniques, which usually happens in fascinating ways, for instance, by stealing items, snooping and sparring. Discovering the opponent servant's personality also unveils element of its attack style, which might imply the gap between victory and loss.

Apart from scouting your opponents, you have to investigate, but this feature is drastically reduced for a RPG Game. You're limited to fourteen basic mazes which are a breeze to plow through. Each maze includes dull item retrieve missions. Outside the dungeon, the competition field is limited to a 3 story high school, which is a little bit disappointing if you're planning to investigate a huge world from the actual Anime Fate Stay Night. Fortunately, several mini-bosses prevent investigation from turning into utterly meaningless.

Apart from PC and Console versions of Fate/Extra, there are several RPG Flash Games too. Flash editions of the game are rather fun only. On the bright side, they are available to play or download for free.

The PlayStation Vita Has Backwards Compatability

The new PlayStation Vita utilizes a new media format known as the PS Vita Card. These small flash memory cartridges store game data and allow you to load games much like a Nintendo DS cartridge or similar media. However, the change in format has left many people wondering about the backwards compatibility of the Playstation Vita with previously purchased games for the PlayStation Portable. Fortunately, Sony has offered a variety of features on the Vita that allow you to enjoy older games and content on the new device.

PlayStation Vita Network Support

By registering your PS Vita with your PlayStation Network account, you can download any PSOne Classics, PS Minis and most PSP downloads that you previously purchased. PSP downloads are being added as games are tested for full compatibility. These should install and run flawlessly on the new Vita. Icons will be created in the LiveArea interface that allow you to launch these games with the tap of your screen.

PS Vita has Backwards Compatibility for Universal Media Discs

With the switch to PS Vita Cards, a UMD reading drive was not included with the Vita. At this time, no known plans have been made to release an external UMD reader for the PS Vita. However, there is still a way to enjoy your games on the new Vita as long as you have access to an original PlayStation Portable that is linked to your PlayStation Network account.

By using the UMD Passport program, you can register games that you own on UMD using your PSP. This allows you to buy downloadable versions of supported games at a reduced price from the PlayStation Vita Store. The process is quick and easy. Simply download the UMD Passport app on your PSP, launch the app, insert any UMD games that you wish to play on your PS Vita and follow the on-screen prompts. After you have completed the process on your PSP, launch the PlayStation Vita Store and check for your discounts in the PSP downloads section.

Graphics for PSP Downloads

A few small features are accessible for PSP downloads that allow you to optimize the graphics for the display. With the substantial increase in both resolution and screen size from the PSP to the Vita, there are noticeable jagged edges and inconsistencies in the display of many PSP games. However, these are just a result of stretching the image to fit the new display and do not interfere with playing the games in any way.

Battlefield 3 - PS3 Review

When EA announced another Battlefield game earlier this year, I could not help but retrieve my beloved copy of Battlefield 2, bought in 2005. This game single-handedly transformed the shooter genre and a quick glance at my old stats revealed that I spent 487 hours (that is almost three straight weeks) of my life shooting, running, sniping, flying helicopters and, quite often, dying. But those hours spent storming Karkand or taking the Kubra Dam are more than just fond memories - BF2 was a turning point in the way games were designed as it shifted the focus away from the single player campaign into the online multi-player domain. The bar was set pretty high and would BF3 be able to live up to the expectations?

It does and it does not. The single-player campaign tells the story of an American invasion of Iran and a separate terrorist plot to use some nukes to trigger a war between the US and Russia. The standard fare of set-pieces such as taking a city or infiltrating and clearing buildings is spiced-up with air battle sequences and tank raid missions, which on the whole work quite well. The campaign lasted about seven hours on normal difficulty setting but once finished I was left with the feeling I had seen most of this before. The evolution of shooters has gone a long way and any new entry to the genre has to be drastically different to make a genuine impact. Similarly the online multiplayer component is fun and updates this sort of game but it does not break new ground as BF2 did back in 2005.

The first thing that strikes about BF3 is that it looks and sounds great. The graphics are detailed and smooth, the frame rate is steady despite a plethora of action on the screen and the environments are highly destructible, thanks to developer DICE's new Frostbite 2 engine. And by destructible I mean everything can be shot through or blown-up, which radically alters the strategies you have to apply in the game. For instance, instead of sneaking around a corner to chase an enemy, you can simply blow a hole in the wall and create your own pathway to your target.

Battlefield 3 was in my eyes worth the wait. It is not the revelation I had dreamt of nor does it radically redefine its genre but it stands out in the already crowded shooter market. And that is an achievement in itself.

Famicom Game Review: Transformers - Convoy No Nazo

In the 80s, any popular brand received a licensed game, so it's no surprise Takara published a game for the Nintendo Family Computer, or Famicom, for the Transformers property. This game, titled Transformers: Convoy no Nazo, translates roughly to Mystery of Optimus Prime. This game was never released in the United States and for good reason: it's horrible.

The game takes place around the series' third season and stars Ultra Magnus in his search for Optimus Prime's killer. This strange plotline, as the 1986 Transformers movie was very clear in that Megatron killed Optimus, does have some merit to it; the Transformers movie was not released in Japan until three years after the game, so the canon explanation went unknown in the meantime.

Perhaps the best part about the game is the ability to transform between the robot and truck forms by holding Down on the control pad. However, since it takes a few seconds to transform this leaves you available to get hit so it is ultimately useless. As a robot, pressing the A button fires a standard gun. As a truck, you can fire bombs upward and forward at enemies in your way, though hit detection is spotty at best and your bullets will mostly go through enemies.

As far as graphics, sound and control are all concerned, Transformers: Convoy no Nazo suffers greatly in every department. Enemy projectiles blend into the background, making it very easy to lose one of your three lives within the first ten seconds of the game. If you manage to get past these essentially invisible projectiles, you will quickly notice the scenery and characters both suffer from little variation and great repetition. Other than Ultra Magnus, a few boss characters and a jet that resembles Starscream, you would never realize this game held the Transformers license.

To make matters worse, the controls may very well be your worst enemy. Jumping in robot form is floaty and hard to control, and the vertical length of Ultra Magnus's jump is about ten feet into the air, producing the side effect of hitting a flying enemy while you're trying to avoid a tank rolling toward you on the ground.

The sound also suffers a case of repetition with the same background music playing throughout each stage. To make matters worse, that one song is atrocious. The only time the music changes is in between levels and when you die, when a short clip of music from the television show is played. While it's nice to hear official music in the game, expect to hear this clip often.

Games of this generation have always had a reputation for being difficult, but this game borders on fiendish. It's simply too easy to die no matter what you're doing. The camouflaged enemy projectiles are a pixel wide at most, and whether you accidentally graze a Decepticon or get shot, one hit is all it takes to lose a life. In fact, it's easier to run past every enemy and learn the pattern to avoid shots rather than trying to shoot them.

This game has no redeeming values, even for a Transformers fan. The money that could be spent on the game is better spent buying your own Ultra Magnus and Decepticon figures and recreating the events of the game in your basement. Avoid this one at all costs.

Cause of Death iPhone Game Review and Tips

Were you ever a fan of Choose Your Own Adventure books? I couldn't get enough of them when I was younger. One of the best parts about them was that there were so many alternate endings, some of them even resulting in death. The books didn't hold your hand like most children's books.

Well, now with touchscreen phones and tablets making their way into millions of homes, technology has allowed for new kind of Choose Your Own Adventure book, or interactive novels. The great thing about these games is that you don't have to turn pages back and forth to find the right one. It's done automatically.

One of the greatest games using this concept is Electronic Arts' Cause of Death. In this murder mystery game, you play through the eyes of various characters, from murder victims to detectives, to the murderers themselves. EA doesn't pull any punches in this game. The Episode "Tough Love" starts you off as one of the victims of the Maskmaker, being killed by having plaster poured over your face. This is not a game for children, as the descriptions can be very graphic. It's refreshing to see a game like this with great storytelling, characters and dialogue, that doesn't need to resort to gimmicks or gore to catch your attention.

The way the game works is that speech bubbles appear and you simply tap the screen to see the next one. Periodically, you'll have to make a choice between several options. There are always better decisions and worse ones, some that could even end in yours or your partner's death. If you make enough right decisions, you get ranked as a Detective and unlock the bonus footage. It's often worth it to replay the game if you mess up, just to see more of the story. Wrong decisions could even get you eaten by a zombie in the Halloween episode.

Another great aspect of this game is the fact that it's free, and has weekly updates that add more free stories. The sooner you download the app, the more free content you get. But if you miss some episodes, you can always purchase them with IAPs. Each week offers one chapter of a story. Each story features the same characters, Detective Mal Fallon and FBI Agent Natara Williams, along with various other characters and a different serial killer. It feels like you're part of an episode of CSI.

If you like good stories and don't mind a lot of reading, Cause of Death is just the game for you. There's really nothing to complain about here. The graphics are polished, the characters are entertaining, and the murderers are genuinely scary. Just download it and start solving murders!

Here are some tips to help you make detective ranking:

1. Pay close attention to everything you read, because you never know when you might need to repeat is as a password or to prove you've been paying attention. Remember any names of people or places that are given to you.

2. The safe choice can often be the wrong choice. Don't say something simply because you think that's what the other character wants to hear, because they often can read right through your lies. You have to think like a psychologist sometimes!

3. Make sure to check for updates weekly so you don't miss any of the story!

That should be enough to get you on your way to becoming a great detective!

Borderlands 2 Release Date

The wait for millions of fans of the original Borderlands game is coming to a close. With a tentative Borderlands 2 release date being slated by the developers as mid to late 2012, gaming geeks and fans alike are already speculating if the second installment can live up to the first. Let's cover what made Borderlands such a hit to start with and investigate if 2K Games and Gearbox Software can step up to the plate with their latest iteration.

Borderlands was released in 2009 and received critical acclaim for its meshing of gaming genre's, namely First Person Shooters and Role Playing Games to coin a new phrase in gaming, the Role Playing Shooter. By the end of 2009, Borderlands had sold over 2 million copies worldwide and this figure has now hit 4.5 million. The games' success was due to a number of reasons including filling a gap between the RPG and FPS genres, the striking cell-shaded graphics, almost endless list of weapons and enormous quest lists. Re-playability also factored into its ongoing success with four pieces of downloadable content which expanded storyline, quests, leveling abilities and included the ultimate of challenges, Crawmerax the Invincible.

The scene for Borderlands was the planet of Pandora and the storyline revolved around you, as one of the four main protagonists on a quest to find mysterious pieces of alien artefacts in order to open 'The Vault'. The game catered well for single player as well as co-op through either two player split screen or up to four players over the net.

Borderlands 2 picks up five years after the opening of the vault (the end of the first game) and the scene is once again laid in Pandora. The new main antagonist, Handsome Jack, has claimed the credit and the riches from the opening of the vault which has allowed him to take over as CEO of the Hyperion Corporation and implant himself as the dictator of Pandora. The players' role in this story begins when Jack back stabs and then leaves the player for dead on the frozen tundra, sufficient enough motivation for revenge.

Everything that made the original game so successful is set to return in its sequel. What can be garnered from available information prior to its release date, the visual style and humorous dialogue will be back, but what is going to set this apart from its predecessor? In a word...Guns. The selection in the first was almost inexhaustible but in the second, they will be. Guns will also be easier to identify visually so no more cross hairs over weapon to see if you want to add it to your inventory. The modifications to weapons will also be ramped up with the inclusion of Eridium enhancements as well as the standard mods available.

There are four new characters to choose from, only two of which have been announced prior to the Borderlands 2 release date. These characters are Salvador the Gunzerker and Maya the Siren. The skill trees for Salvador and all of the new characters have been completely overhauled as well. My favourite so far is Salvador's' 'Sexual Tyrannosaurus' (can you name the movie this was taken from) which regenerates health as you are taking damage.

Vehicles have received some attention with four person transports now being available, a great leap ahead as anyone who played four person co-op in the first can testify to. One of the criticisms of the first Borderlands was the 'sameness' of the environments. A concerted effort is being made this time round to ensure a plethora of different areas, with the added bonus that if you can see it, you can explore it. Three areas which have been named are the arctic tundra, dangerous grasslands and the corrosive caverns.

Brand new enemies are also on the cards with these already being named:
Elemental Skags - This time they pass their power to others nearby.Arctic Bullymong - A gorilla-like creature can throw torn up pieces of scenery at you,Surveyors - Bots who can re-energise nearby allies,WAR Loader - A large bot that fires missiles and bullets, and my favorite,Nomad - A chubby bandit with an all-round shield, and an angry midget tied to it.

From the limited information available to date, it seems that a significant amount of time has been spent to rectify the small shortfalls that were present in Borderlands. With the Borderlands 2 release date approaching, it appears that 2K and Gearbox have gone much further than a 'spit and polish' just to rake in some cash.

Borderlands 2 Release Date price guarantees have been put in place by the major dealers. Have a look at the price comparisons at http://borderlands2game.com/
